Whilst I’d discess Caol Ila in the past it was in the context of speculation of their contract distilling Smokehead Whiskies, and as a key part of many Johnnie Walker blends, including the Black Label. Today I’m going to review their 12 Year Single Malt to see how it stands…on it’s own two feet…

Three down in the Johnnie Walker core range exploration and today we’re looking at the Gold Label Reserve, a dram I first tried at my wife’s 50th Birthday party. I look at what can best be described as a marketing SNAFU with the mutating name changes to this dram, as well as where it sits with the benefit of more time to review it. This one surprised me, I have to be honest.

The next step in the Johnnie Walker core range exploration brings me to try the Double Black, a non-age statement version that is supposedly similar to the Black, just smokier. Spoiler alert, yes it’s smokey, no it is nothing like the Black Label. Months ago I named it as my favourite Blended Scotch under $100 AUD for 2024…with more time to review it properly, has my opinion changed?

My exploration of the Johnnie Walker core range continues as I review the Black Label, a 12 Year Blended Scotch that has been around for over a hundred years. I also go a bit off the rails and look at how much Australia and the United States differ in terms of recommended alcohol intake guidelines, weighing your Whisky bottles to measure how much is left and whether or not more expensive bottles are intentionally made heavier to make them feel more classy.

So begins my deep dive into all of the Johnnie Walker Core Range of Scotch Whiskies starting with their entry-level Red Label. I look at the history of the ownership of Johnnie Walker since the beginning, as well as what goes into this Blend…so far as we know. I also answer the question of…can you, or should you, drink this neat?

The Nova is the entry-level Single Malt Ausskey from the Australian Whisky institution that is Starward. It’s a red berry explosion of sorts, and not only do I review this amazing Single Malt, I also review four of the most common cork types. If you like ASMR of opening Whisky bottles, this is your episode to watch!
