Testimonials

Last week I had the pleasure of partaking in the ACRNA Annual Conference. During which time I was fortunate enough to witness two spectacular presentations by my esteemed colleague and friend, John Chidgey.

His conference presentation flexed his technical abilities and knowledge on AI, machine learning and all things automation. However, his dinner presentation was an unexpected insight into John’s background, his challenges and his conquests as a visionary automation engineer in a reactive world; as well as some deeply personal insight into his health and how he identified and resolved a chronic fatigue issue. John was both candid and humble in sharing his struggle with sleep apnoea, encouraging many others at the conference to share their experiences and educate others on symptoms and remedies.

It is always refreshing to see someone share vulnerabilities with humour, grace and most importantly a message for people to take home and to learn from.

Treating HMI and Alarms as a Layer of Protection Presentation

Invited to present on the “Treating HMI and Alarms as a Layer of Protection” drawing on my decades of experience in the Automation and Control Systems space, Alarm Management and HMI Design. The presentation was described by UCDS President Dave Lee as: “…Summarising …(what was covered at the conference) and introduced a new spin to it (from the angle of) Independent Protection Layers and Safety Systems…”. Presented at 10:15am on the 19th of September, the final day of the conference though described as a Case Study in Alarm Management, a LOT more ground was covered than only that.

Automation Improvements Case Study Presentation

Invited to present on the “Automation Improvements Case Study: Roll-out of NMC Well Automation” as part of my work role bringing SCADA and Business systems together securely and at a very large scale. A follow-on from the 2022 presentation where we took the next step and used ML Data for large scale Automated decision making in the control system.

Dinner Speaker

Also invited to be the dinner speaker for the conference. It was a thrill to speak to such a great audience about my career in Engineering, Automation and about how I started podcasting, then touching on how fatigue has affected me personally and professionally as well as taking lessons learned from episodes of Causality where control rooms and operators could have prevented those incidents from occurring.
